Also aboard the plane were four physicians, including two from Hawking's own medical staff. Hawking has ALS--amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's disease, which gradually robs people of the use of their muscles. Now 65, he has been confined to a wheelchair for nearly four decades and now communicates largely through small facial movements, often using them to generate computer-rendered speech.
