Scientists are unraveling some of the mysteries of the closest star to Earth from images taken by Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) and Hinode probes that were launched in the fall of 2006.
The STEREO project consists of two observatories, one ahead of Earth in its solar orbit and the other behind it. Its purpose is to capture 3D images of the sun and study solar flares. On the left is a 2D image of the sun (see expanded photo) and on the right is a 3D version (see expanded photo).
To view the 3D image, you need special glasses that you can easily make. The first three pages in this gallery contain 2D and 3D images while the rest are 2D.
