Photos: Pluto probe returns photos of Jupiter

March 1, 2007 8:56 AM PST

This look at the volcanically-active Jovian moon Io was taken from 2.5 million miles on February 26.

The umbrella-shaped feature at the 11 o'clock position in the photo at the right is a gigantic plume of dust from the volcano Tvashtar and reaches more than 180 miles above the planet. The points on the right side of Io are mountains catching the setting sun.

In the photo on the left, the Tvashtar volcano in the 11 o'clock positon is located where the dark spot is. The surrounding circle is fallout from the volcano and is about the size of Texas.
