On the third annual PARK(ing) Day taking place on Friday, September 21, 2007, urban parking spaces across the country were commandeered and turned into small oases. The all-day event is sponsored by nonprofits Rebar, Public Architecture and the Trust for Public Land, as a way to encourage people to re-think the way urban space is used.
In San Francisco, Jennifer McLaughlin rides a bike that is powering a blender in which she's making a smoothie. She was making the drink at the temporary demonstration of a sustainable rooftop garden that she and some colleagues from the San Francisco Department of Public Health had set up in a parking space near City Hall.
