Photos: Student whale watchers with wireless

May 10, 2007 3:55 AM PDT

The fourth-graders started at 9 a.m. and ended at 2 p.m., observing the behaviors of 79,000-pound humpbacks from shore. They would record, sometimes frantically when four of five whales popped up, what they saw with handheld wireless devices called an Indigo, which looks like a Palm Pilot.

Pictured here are Ha'aheo Kaiawe, Josiah Clark (with binoculars), Alika Tolzmann (in hat), Rachel Alcoser, and a tiny part of Brandy Peterson.
