GE is working on a next-generation water purification technology designed for brackish water, meaning water from lakes, rivers and underground sources.
At the company's Shanghai labs, GE has created a prototype of an electrochemical desalination product. As water passes through the filter, an electrical field is applied to take out impurities. So far, it appears that the system and new materials are more efficient than existing membranes, said GE researcher Wei Cai.
