Genzyme Center was expensive to build--$140 million, which is substantially more than what a typical office building the same size would cost. The company says the investment was done to create a healthy and pleasant working space for employees, who have been shown to be more productive in well-lit spaces with access to fresh air. Employees in this building call in sick less than 1 percent of the time--less than those working in other Genzyme buildings, according to the company.
