The Peugeot Design Contest 2008, now in its fifth year, gives designers a chance to come up with an innovative concept car. The contest opened at the Beijing Motor Show in April, and submissions closed in July.

Since then, 29 finalists were announced, and Peugeot is asking for consumers to vote on them through September 15. First place wins 10,000 euros (about $14,750) and a small-scale model of their car, among other things. Following are some entrant highlights.

The Peugeot Verde, by Michael Witus Schierup of Denmark, plays with an interesting safety concept. The car is designed to be an egg shape with two wings. On impact, the car's airbags would inflate between the main car cabin and each wing to minimize impact on passengers.

For easy maneuverability, and surely for those who hate the back-and-forth maneuvering of parallel parking, the car's wheels can turn 45 degrees left and right, allowing the car to practically slide into a parking space.
