Photos: Automakers race toward electric

General Motors hopes to shock the world with its new all-electric concept car, the Chevrolet Volt, which was shown off at the 2007 North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January.

It has a range of 40 city miles after a six-hour charge from a household electrical outlet. The electric car sports huge 21-inch wheels in front. It also includes a 3-cylinder, turbocharged engine for extended travel.
