Images: Detecting extraterrestrial life

A single antenna tile from the Mileura Wide-Field Array, a radio astronomy telescope in the Australian outback that, theoretically, can detect "Earth-like civilizations around any of the 1,000 nearest stars," according to the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. The completed telescope will use dozens of these tiles spread over an area of many square meters.
