These LED (light-emitting diode) flashlights can light up a room as well as a conventional flashlight, but the batteries last considerably longer. The flashlights were displayed by Hewlett-Packard spinoff Lumileds, which is based in San Jose, Calif., and now a unit of Philips.
LEDs are essentially silicon chips that can produce light. They don't have moving or attached parts (an advantage) and benefit from the cost-saving manufacturing techniques of the chip world.
