Fellow NASA Langley research pilot Phil Brown (right) also flew spin research aircraft during that era. In addition, NASA says, his feats included flying an F-16 jet into thunderstorms, enduring more than 700 lightning strikes, a research effort that helped in the creation of lightning protection standards. Both Brown and Patton had earlier been Navy pilots, and together logged more than 16,000 flight hours at Langley.
