A test pilot for the U.S. Navy during the 1950s, Mercury astronaut Alan Shepard in May 1961 became the first American in space. In the Freedom 7 spacecraft, he traveled to an altitude of 116 miles in a suborbital flight that lasted 15 minutes, 28 seconds. He later flew on the Apollo 14 mission to the moon.
