This photo was taken the evening deconstruction on the old bridge began. Since the section of Bay Bridge that's being removed is so old, it's unpredictable what might happen if it's lifted. Instead, it's being slid to the side by the skid jack, then lowered. This part of the operation will be done at the same time the new section of bridge is being connected.

The large concrete pillar seen on the right will be part of the support system that leads the new bridge into the Yerba Buena tunnel.
