It's been almost a year since June 29, 2007, that frenzied day the iPhone went on sale to the masses. Here we give you a pictorial of some of the highs and lows of the smartphone's first year in the hands of consumers. You can also read Tom Krazit's account, "The iPhone, one year later."

Apple had gotten things rolling five-and-a-half months earlier. On January 9, 2007, onstage at Macworld in San Francisco, CEO Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone and touted its functionality, describing the gadget as the "ultimate" digital device. It immediately drew the attention of potential customers and competitors as a breakthrough in the way people use mobile computers.
