It wasn't just hardware that turned heads on day 1 of CTIA. Microsoft answered many users' prayers by announcing an update to its Windows Mobile operating system.

With Windows Mobile 6.1, Microsoft is tackling some of the chronic complaints users have about the software. A new home screen looks better and provides quicker access to key information and applications. Browsing Web sites with Internet Explorer Mobile should be easier, thanks to a new feature that allows users to pan in and out rather than scrolling all across the page to find the part they're looking for. The new version of Windows Mobile will also have a few key improvements in messaging. Several hardware makers have already said they'll offer the upgrade, which is due out in the second quarter.

CNET editor Bonnie Cha has more details on the update here.
