In addition to rescuing products that might otherwise be thrown away, American Science & Surplus uses shipping boxes that may have been cast off due to misprinted labels. The only boxes the company doesn't use are from liquor bottles or feminine hygiene products.
Aiming to become even more "green," it is switching from petroleum-based polystyrene packing peanuts to paper for cushioning shipped items. Cable considered starch-based packing peanuts but declined to use them because the edible nuggets might attract rodents.
