Today's Vietnam is a generation or two removed from the war that killed at least 3 million of its citizens and 58,000 Americans. However, state-of-the-art weaponry from the 1960s and 1970s lingers. In the former demilitarized zone in central Vietnam, signs like these warn people to stay away from old weapons.

At least 500 children have died since the war ended in nearly 1,000 accidents that occur each year, according to nonprofit Clear Path International, which publicizes the problem and treats victims. Kids sometimes pick up small bombs that look like toys. Farmers continue to turn up unexploded ordnance in fields, and some adults still try to take apart weapons to sell the scrap metal. Hundreds of thousands of bombs remain in the ground.
