The Tele-immersive Environment for Everybody (TEEVE) project is developing a 3D videoconferencing system. The project uses 48 cameras and more than a dozen computers at each site, combining the locations and people into one image with the help of a neutral backdrop.

Two dancers who may be in different cities, for example, can virtually appear side-by-side. TEEVE researchers estimate that it will be another three to five years away before the technology will be ready for prime time.
