Zenith engineer Eugene Polley invented the first wireless TV remote control, called Flashmatic, in 1955. The clicker worked by sending narrow beams of light to four controls on the set.

It also suffered from a major problem--it sometimes worked on its own. Sunlight could activate the controls sending the set in a spin.
