Photos: Tuning in to HD Radio

Until recently, there were few home receivers that could tune the free digital AM and FM broadcasts known as HD Radio. But several companies are now offering receivers; more models are expected by January. The New York Times tested some receivers in Seattle in a second-floor apartment and in a single-family detached house. Here's a look at five of them.

In testing, The New York Times found that the RadioShack Accurian offers above-average sound quality from its speakers despite being the lowest-priced receiver reviewed. Its remote control slips into a slot on top of the radio for storage, a nice option found in no other receiver. It has a clock, but there is no way to use it as an alarm.

The Accurian had excellent reception in the detached house, but suffered somewhat in the apartment test.
