With a growing distaste for pesticide-laden, genetically modified produce, some people are turning to growing their own vegetables. The AeroGrow AeroGarden makes homegrown greens a possibility even in urban environments where groundspace is limited or even impossible to come by. It uses an almost entirely hands-off process, with a computerized system that automatically switches the light on and off on schedule and dispenses water and nutrients when necessary. And the AeroGarden alerts users when it's low on water. The aeroponic system means roots grow suspended in the air and don't require dirt (read: no muddy mess in the kitchen).

At $150 for the system and $20 for additional seed packets, it's not cheap. But it's a good option for people looking for the truly do-it-yourself salad but who lack the green thumb or garden space to do it the old-fashioned way.
