The Performer self-tuning system, shown here on a Les Paul, is calibrated for relatively quick tuning changes, including changes in the middle of songs. A new tuning can be launched by tapping the tuning selector button mounted on the guitar body (strings do not need to be strummed in the "open," unfretted position for the system to work). Housed entirely in the body of the instrument, the Performer is programmed with 336 preset tunings, and can accommodate 96 programmable tunings and sort them into one of four tuning libraries (open tunings and keys, chords, modals, and dissonant tunings). An LCD readout cut into the side of the guitar body indicates the tone sequence and tuning category. String tension is adjusted by levers and springs mounted behind the bridge.
