While the penetration rate is only approaching 60 percent of the population, cell phones in the Philippines seem to be everywhere and have become an important part of life. At the domestic airport in Manila there is a wall lined with electrical outlets to enable people to recharge their cell phones. By contrast, the CTIA, the U.S. trade association for the mobile industry, recently released figures putting U.S. cell phone penetration at around 82 percent of the population.
