It may be dark outside, but Shutterfly doesn't sleep at night in the run-up to the New Year. Workers rotate through 8-hour shifts to keep the plant humming 24 hours daily. A company bus is available to pick them up from public train stops. Nearly 100 of those people may stay on full time into the next year. Many seasonal workers return year after year, recruiting family and friends.
Shutterfly recently opened a 102,000-square-foot plant in Charlotte, N.C., to help handle some 60 percent of orders that come from east of the Mississippi River.
Shutterfly outsources the manufacturing of products that make up for 8 percent of revenue to third parties within the United States. Those items are made with heat transfer printing and include mugs and mouse pads. Sterling silver necklaces and bracelets, wooden keepsake boxes, and pewter keychains are made elsewhere as well.
