The number of people working at Shutterfly nearly quadruples in the fourth quarter of the year. The company begins hiring some 1,300 forklift operators, equipment operators, factory managers, and others through temporary agencies around September. About one-third of applicants get a gig.

Early each year, Shutterfly weighs the need for adding more engineers and other professionals to its full-time staff of 430 people to prepare the Web site well in advance of the holiday traffic jam.

Shutterfly closely guards the inner workings of its plants. The company told CNET News.com that we would be the last media outlet allowed inside the factory.

"We do things machines weren't really made to do," said CEO Jeff Housenbold. "We have a secret sauce and we want to protect (it)."
