Before this fall, the MV Explorer accommodated wireless Internet access on about 60 percent of the ship, available in the computer lab and various Internet cafes (one pictured here). But this summer, Semester at Sea is installing new Cisco routers and broadband connectivity so that the ship will be 100 percent wireless.

The ship will also have new cell phone access so that students and faculty can send and receive text messages and phone calls.

"The whole ship will become a roaming region. You can be 1,000 miles out into the ocean and receive a call from mom. You may not want that, however," said Moschella.

He added: "It may be disruptive to the class environment, but it's something we have to evaluate. All universities are dealing with that."
