Microsoft has quietly flipped the switch on a new feature in Internet Explorer 7 that turns the address bar in the browser green when surfing to trustworthy Web sites.

VeriSign and Overstock.com are among the first to use the feature, which requires Web sites to get a new security certificate.

In addition, the Web browser, will display the name of the company that owns the certificate and a yellow padlock in the address bar.

When someone clicks on company name or the lock icon, IE 7 will display additional information on the certificate, including the location of the company it was issued to.
