Photos: Getting around Democratic convention

August 26, 2008 11:00 PM PDT

Denver's Democratic mayor said he wanted to "make this the greenest convention in the history of the planet." The party hired an environmental activist and awarded her the title "director of greening." She in turn hired an "official carbon adviser." But even the concerted efforts of the greening gurus can't eliminate the ugly backside of this week's "green" convention: discarded, rotting trash from tens of thousands of attendees. (It seems to be something of a sore point. After convention staff realized we took this photo, we were denied permission to take any more without obtaining explicit authorization from a press coordinator.)
