GPS devices might not help you get rescued if you're lost, but they can help you avoid getting stuck in the first place. You'll want one with a built-in map. GPS devices are available both as handhelds and laptop-based machines. In the handheld category, our colleagues at CNET Reviews gave an Editor's Choice award to the Lowrance iWay 500c, which can be bought online for between $500 to $600. The other option is to bring your laptop, plug in a GPS receiver (about $100) through a USB port, and use something like the DeLorme Street Atlas USA software for Windows.
