Because Gatsos are so commonplace, they're also frequent targets. This one, just outside Birmingham, was destroyed by fire. The Web site of the group Motorists Against Detection says the device was probably attacked because the urban speed limit in that area had been dropped from 40 mph to 30 mph. The self-proclaimed vigilante group describes the cameras as "just money-making machines."

Motorists Against Detection explains its motives this way: "We are now planning to target any and all cameras until the Government sees sense and rethinks its road safety policy. Before we had speed cameras we had the safest roads in Europe--since their introduction this is no longer true."
