"The Union Is Dissolved!" shouts the headline
from 1860 from the Charleston Mercury, which went to press immediately after the secession vote that led to the Civil War. This is part of the Newseum's history of newspapers, which shows how changes in language and technology led to the development of modern newspapers. By the late 19th century, newspapers--in design and language, at least--were becoming recognizably akin to what you might read today.
