On Tuesday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced nominations for the 2007 Academy Awards, and Lucasfilm divisions Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound received six technical nods. ILM was nominated for best visual effects for both Transformers and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, while Skywalker Sound received nods for best sound editing for Transformers, Ratatouille, and There Will be Blood. Ratatouille also was nominated for best sound mixing.
Here, Skywalker Sound director of sound design Randy Thom, who previously won Oscars for his work on The Incredibles in 2004 and The Right Stuff in 1983, and who this year was nominated for his work on Ratatouille, explains how he mixed hundreds of sound effects into a single scene in the Pixar film, which was also nominated for best animated feature.
