Some 250,000 spectators dotted the banks of the Charles River over the course of the weekend. Chilly temperatures and heavy rains are common in the Boston area in late October, but this year the weather was sunny and crisp--albeit a little windy. The Head of the Charles is an upstream race, and boats need to navigate multiple sharp bends and through a total of seven bridges. The fastest eight-person boats can complete the course in under 15 minutes; a single-person boat can take upward of half an hour.
