Another example of a Web hoax triggering a stock plunge (and of journalists being duped) occurred last summer when Engadget was tricked by a fake internal Apple e-mail into thinking Apple had postponed the launch of Mac OS X Leopard and the much-hyped iPhone . The gadget blog's report triggered a midday plunge in Apple stock, but the stock recovered after the story was retracted and the writer apologized.
