Images: High-tech hoaxes and media mess-ups

Thousands of eager YouTube viewers were captivated by "Lonelygirl15," a pretty young video blogger whose cloistered upbringing contributed to a mysterious and confessional set of video blogs.

But in September 2006, following weeks of rumors, a handful of Los Angeles-based twentysomethings outed themselves as the team that had created and scripted "Lonelygirl." The protagonist was actually an actress named Jessica Rose. The series nevertheless continued until August 2007.
