Charles R. Schwab built a discount brokerage giant in San Francisco by reaching beyond the rich guys who usually play the stock market. In 2003, with the company stuck in a long slump, Schwab handed the CEO's job over to David Pottruck, who had been co-CEO with Schwab. Just 14 months later, Pottruck was ousted, and Schwab returned to run the brokerage.
