Photos: 'Popular Mechanics' breakthroughs

Electronic Arts' evolution game, Spore, hit store shelves on September 7 and quickly went on to sell more than a million copies. The game doesn't strive to teach science, but its creators, including legendary game designer Will Wright, hope it will inspire more interest in science and space.
