Photos: Intel's future tech for robots, health care, PCs

Intel is making strides to improve the energy efficiency and the carbon footprint of its products. Its 32-nanometer chipsets, set for production in 2009, enable more chips per wafer, faster transistors, and less energy per transistor than their 45-nanometer predecessors, which have been shipped inside 15 million computers to date. The company is exploring other means of reducing power demand by personal computers. One project would enable hardware rather than an operating system to control power-saving settings.

Researchers are also experimenting with ways of automatically switching off a computer's wireless radio, such as during lulls in video streaming, without affecting the user experience.
