When the cost of cooking oil tripled in a matter of weeks in the early 1990s in Kenya, engineers at the nonprofit KickStart designed a manual press enabling people to squeeze their own oil out of sunflower seeds. More than 1,000 units have been sold. Some owners use the oil for personal use, while others established small businesses to sell the oil.
