A short walk away from the synchrotron lab is the Stanford Linear Accelerator, which is undergoing an expansion. The seemingly endless hallway extends for 2 miles. Within a tunnel 20 feet underground, experiments force subatomic particles to collide at close to the speed of light. This four-decade-old building remains the world's longest for only a short while longer. A Beijing airport terminal is poised to steal that title this fall.
