In his 1945 letter to the editors of Wireless World magazine, Arthur C. Clarke proposed the notion of geostationary satellite communications. According to Lakdiva.org, Clarke's notion was ignored for 20 years, but eventually proved prescient with the 1965 launch of Intelsat I Early Bird, the first such satellite.
