Images: The sci-fi effect on high tech

Philip K. Dick's 1968 novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? took an early look at intelligent androids and the way they would interact with humans. And, of course, it inspired the film some call the best science fiction movie of all time, Ridley Scott's Blade Runner.

But the title has also inspired things like The Electric Sheep Co., the biggest and best-known developer of large-scale projects in the virtual world, Second Life, as well as the famous Electric Sheep screensaver project, which generates endless mesmerizing fractal frames.
