The Boston and San Francisco areas are the biggest hubs for nanotechnology, according to a mashup Google map released Thursday. The map was created using data collected by the Project for Emerging Nanotechnologies. People can search the map by ZIP code to see what kinds of nanotechnology organizations are in their area. Other cities high on the list of nanotechnology hubs, or "NanoMetros," include Denver, Chicago, Seattle and Austin, Texas.

Julia Moore, deputy director of the project, said people should know more about this technology that is in everything from energy to medical care and is fast becoming a significant part of the global economy. In 2006, $12.4 billion was spent worldwide on nanotechnology research and development, a 30 percent increase from the previous year. By 2014, $2.6 trillion worth, or 15 percent, of all manufactured goods will have a base in nanotechnology, according to an analysis by Lux Research.
