The Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory have designed methods for hosting massive 5-megawatt wind turbines on floating platforms as far as 80 miles offshore. Of the three designs pictured here, MIT is focusing on the tension leg platform (center), which is used in deep-water offshore oil rigs.
