Google, Yahoo and Microsoft each agreed to give CNET News.com an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at their operations and strategies for our special report on the state and future of security on the Web.

As vice president of engineering at Google, Douglas Merrill is at the forefront of a critical period in the Digital Age as so-called Web 2.0 technologies pose challenges to online security. Merrill heads up Google's security team of about 50 people. One of his responsibilities is to secure Web applications.

"We don't yet know what all the things are that can break in these interesting, exciting, new, highly interactive Web applications," Merrill said. "We believe we are at the forefront of a new science. We all have to invent the wheel in Web security."
