Japanese game developer Square, creator of the popular "Final Fantasy" series of role-playing games, announced Tuesday that it plans to merge with Enix, another Japanese game publisher also known for role-playing games. Enix will acquire Square in a stock swap, exchanging a four-fifths share of its stock for each share of Square. The merged company will be known as Square Enix.
