PlayStation 2 shipments hit 30 million

Worldwide shipments of Sony's PlayStation 2 video game console have reached 30 million units, the company announced Thursday, another sign of Sony's long head start in the video game race. Sony Computer Entertainment of America said that as of May 5, it has shipped 11.3 million consoles in North America, 9.9 million in Japan and Asia, and 8.8 million in Europe.

Sony released the PlayStation 2 a full year before its new competitors, Microsoft's Xbox and Nintendo's GameCube, arrived on the market. Nintendo shipped about 4 million GameCubes for its fiscal year ended March 31, and Microsoft expects Xbox shipments to total 3.5 million to 4 million units for its fiscal year ending June 30.
