Sony cuts Memory Stick price

Consumer electronics maker Sony has cut the price of its Memory Stick flash memory cards. The 16MB card dropped from $35 to $25; the 32MB from $50 to $35; the 64MB from $80 to $50; and the 128MB from $150 to $90. After a somewhat lukewarm response from the market initially, Memory Stick has been picking up speed recently and taking share away from CompactFlash and SmartMedia.

Sony's price cuts are the latest in a series from manufacturers of competing flash memory card formats, including Secure Digital, SmartMedia and CompactFlash. Flash memory card makers made aggressive price drops last year in response to an industrywide inventory glut.
