Short Take: HP debuts Net-enabled laser printer

Hewlett-Packard has unveiled its HP Color LaserJet 4550 printer family at the Comdex trade show in Las Vegas. The printers feature Net-enabled technologies and an embedded Web server that allows for remote management from a standard Web browser. The printers support future e-services with an HP ChaiServer Embedded Virtual Machine, an open architecture that allows customers to develop or use future custom Java applications. The printers also have infrared printing capabilities, allowing them to print without a PC or server connection. The printers feature a 233-MHz processor; 128MB RAM, upgradeable to 192MB; a 5GB hard disk; and an HP JetDirect 610N network card. The printers range from $1,999 to $4,289 each.
